Rick Hamel Here’s a video of a remote-controlled robotic dragon that also breathes fire. Why? Because as scary as dragons seem in fantasy novels, now we finally know that their aerodynamics pass muster in the real world.
Rick Hamel, an RC vehicle modeler, spent a year building the so-called “Mythical Beast,” which won Best in Show at Weak Signals’ RC model show in Toledo, Ohio. The great pitchers in baseball’s record book are mostly names out of a distant past, men like Christy Mathewson. Cy Young, Walter Johnson and Grover Alexander. But since 1946 a hawk-nosed lefthander with a marvelously smooth motion has been setting down National League batters with such consistency that he now must be classed with the giants of the game. Last week Milwaukee’s 39-year-old Warren Spahn could look back on another superb season at an age when most stars have long since retired to sell insurance or peddle beer.
I’ve been an English professor for nearly 20 years, but people still tell me I don’t look like one. Not because I’m young (I’m not), but because I’m Asian American. Whenever professors are depicted in shows or movies, they’re usually stereotypes—elitist, intimidating, eccentric, out of touch, occasionally inspiring—and they’re almost always white and male and, yes, wearing wool jackets. So for me it was startling, even emotional, to see Sandra Oh as a professor trying to run a dysfunctional English department at an East Coast liberal arts university on the Netflix show The Chair.
