The decision was arrived at to allow for the demolition of the old toll station at the weighbridge.

Motorists have been asked to use the holding yard on either side of the highway during the two-day traffic disruption.

Alternatively, road users can consider Njambini flyover-Njambini-Engineer-Olkalou-Gilgil road or Lanet-Ol Joro Orok-Olkalou-Engineer-Njambini-Njambini flyover.

Traffic officers were also forced to spend the night on the road while trying to clear the gridlock.

According to Gilgil sub-county police boss Emmanuel Opuru, this was after a truck lane near the Gilgil weighbridge was closed to allow completion of ongoing road repairs.

"The traffic was also unusually high because of closing of schools, leading to the gridlock," he explained.

Opuru faulted motorists noting the gridlock was worsened by their impatience that also led to the snarl-up which was yet to be cleared by the following morning.

"Some of the motorists also decided to drive on the wrong lanes and others used adjacent earth roads, further worsening the situation," Opuru said.
